A note on sold-out products
Why Turkey Tail & Cordyceps are sold out
Under UK food law, any food that wasn’t eaten to a significant degree in the UK or EU before 15 May 1997 counts as a “novel food”. A novel food can’t be sold, including as a food supplement, until it has been assessed and authorised by the Food Standards Agency.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) and Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) are now treated as unauthorised novel foods in the UK. This is about consumption history, not a finding that they are unsafe. Until they are authorised, we have stopped selling them, and every product that contains them (Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, the 7 Blend and the four-bottle Mushroom Bundle) is marked sold out.
Our Lion’s Mane and Reishi tinctures are made from the mushroom fruit body, which has a long history of use and is not affected. We’ll bring the others back if and when the rules allow.

Descriptions cover appearance, habitat and traditional and culinary use, for interest only.

Lion’s Mane
Hericium erinaceus
In Clarity
A creamy-white fruiting body covered in long, soft, cascading spines, like a lion’s mane or a frozen waterfall. In the wild it grows on old beech and oak, and it has a long history in East Asian cooking, where its texture is often compared to crab.

Reishi
Ganoderma lucidum
In Calm
A kidney-shaped bracket with a glossy, lacquered red-brown cap and a pale growing edge. Too woody and bitter to eat as it is, Reishi has been steeped as a tea in Chinese and Japanese tradition for around two thousand years.

Rooted in Avalon
A small company from an old landscape
Avalon Fungi takes its name from the Isle of Avalon, the old name for Glastonbury and the Tor that rises above the Somerset Levels. It’s where we’re based, and where the idea for the company began.
We keep our range deliberately small. Every tincture starts with 100% UK-grown mushrooms, cultivated without chemical sprays and dual extracted at a 1:4 ratio, so the label tells you exactly what you’re buying.

Inside the bottle
What dual extract means
Step 1
Grown in Britain
Mushrooms grown in the UK, cultivated without chemical sprays.
Step 2
Hot water extraction
A long, slow simmer draws out the water-soluble compounds.
Step 3
Alcohol extraction
A patient alcohol steep captures what water alone leaves behind.
Step 4
Combined and bottled
The two extracts are combined at a 1:4 ratio and bottled in 50ml amber glass.
How to use: shake well, then take 1–2 pipettes a day, on their own or in water, tea or coffee. Don’t exceed the amount on the label.

What ‘dual extract’ means

Reishi: two thousand years of the ‘mushroom of immortality’
Why Reishi was once reserved for emperors, where it grows, and why it has always been simmered rather than cooked.
Good questions
Frequently asked
What is a dual extract?
Mushroom cell walls are tough, so each mushroom is extracted twice, once in hot water and once in alcohol, and the two extracts are combined, so the tincture contains both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds.
How do I take a tincture?
Shake well, then take 1–2 pipettes a day, on their own or stirred into water, tea or coffee. Please don’t exceed the amount on the label. Many people take Clarity in the morning and Calm in the evening.
Where are your mushrooms grown?
All of our mushrooms are 100% UK grown and cultivated without chemical sprays.
How long does delivery take?
UK delivery is free on orders over £25. Delivery times and costs for smaller orders are on our shipping details page.
Can I take mushroom tinctures alongside medication?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision, please speak to your GP or pharmacist before using any food supplement.
Why are Turkey Tail and Cordyceps sold out?
Both are now treated as unauthorised “novel foods” under UK law, because they weren’t widely eaten in the UK or EU before May 1997. That means they can’t be sold as supplements until the Food Standards Agency authorises them. It isn’t a safety finding. Read more.
